When will President Buhari be considered incapacitated?

AT the homestretch of the 2015 presidential election, the Goodluck Jonathan’s re-election campaign team challenged then candidate Muhammadu Buhari to a sport contest. When the gauntlet was left unpicked, the team in a follow up, set the internet abuzz with the juxtaposition of the pictures of President Jonathan and members of  his Federal Executive Council jogging and that of not-too-good- looking candidate Buhari. The challenge which came on the heels of simmering conjectures on the health condition of candidate Buhari was aimed at passing one message which is: President Jonathan is healthier than candidate Buhari to carry out the duties of the office of president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. But was “health” given a premium in the election?  The vuvuzelas of the opposition party was so fortissimo that not even the yawping of Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti state could be heard. They rally-cried “Nigeria sai changi” and people responded with “Sai Buhari” and thus turned a blind

Chester Bennington, the lead singer of Linkin Park, was found dead on Thursday of an apparent suicide a week before the California alt-rock band was due to embark on a US tour.    Bennington, 41, known for his powerful, belting vocals, died at his Palos Verdes home near Los Angeles, the Los Angeles County Coroner's office said.    Spokesman Brian Elias said the death was being handled as an apparent suicide, and celebrity website TMZ, citing law enforcement sources, said Bennington had hung himself while alone at the house when his family was out of town.

Tunisia bans Wonder Woman after al-Chaab complaint

A court in Tunisia has banned Wonder Woman, a US film starring a former soldier with the Israeli army, more than a month after it was scheduled to open at cinemas, a legal source said. The film was due to be screened at two venues in Tunis in early June, but the showings were "suspended" following a complaint from the nationalist al-Chaab party. The court finally decided to impose the ban last Friday, prosecution spokesman Sofiene Sliti said. The verdict was only disclosed to the media this week without a reason given for the judgement. Al-Chaab demanded the film be banned in Tunisia because Gadot had defended Israel's 2014 war on the Palestinian enclave of Gaza on Facebook.

Cricket World Cup: Inspired India Down the Aussies

India won by 36 runs India - 281/4(Harmanpreeth 171; Villaini 1-19)  Australia - 245 (Villaini 75, Blackwell 90; Goswami 2-26) Mithali Raj's troops aced the defending champions with a sumptuous performance to enter the finals of the World Cup 2017. Rain delayed the start of the 2nd semi-final and by the time the weather cleared, the match had to be reduced to 42 overs per side. Harmanpreeth Kaur produced the innings of a lifetime to help India to a huge total of 281/4 in 42 overs. Opting to bat, India made a mediocre start, losing both their openers in the powerplay. Captain Mithali Raj and Harmanpreeth then stabilised the innings with a 66-run partnership. Mithali was castled by leggie Beams in the 25th over and at that stage, it looked like India would struggle to reach the 200-mark. However, Harmanpreeth took the game by the scruff of the neck and shocked the Aussies. She reached her century by pushing her reluctant partner for a double after dabbing the ball to midwicket.

Despacito censored: Malaysia bans 'unsuitable' hit from state stations

Malaysia has banned state broadcasters from playing the hit single Despacito following complaints about the song's "steamy" lyrics, officials say. A senior minister said the single, featuring Canadian singer Justin Bieber on a remix, was considered un-Islamic. Malaysia has strict censorship laws and has banned sensitive material before. Despacito, by Puerto Rican artist Luis Fonsi, was earlier named the most-streamed song of all time, receiving 4.6bn plays worldwide in six months. "Despacito will not be aired by the government-owned broadcast stations because we received public complaints," Malaysia's communications minister Salleh Said Keruak told AFP news agency. "The lyrics are not suitable to be heard," he added. Meanwhile, privately-owned radio stations have been "encouraged" to "practice self-censorship," he said.

Several others were injured on Kos, mayor George Kyritsis said. A small tsunami was reported on the Turkish coast. Pictures on social media showed people walking with water lapping their ankles.

Nigeria total debt rose by N4.76tn in 2016 - DMO

Nigeria total debt rose by N4.76tn in 2016, the Debt Management Office has disclosed. The DMO disclosed this in its 2016 Annual Report and Statement of Accounts obtained by our correspondent in Abuja on Wednesday. According to the office, Nigeria’s debt as of December 2016 stood at N17.36tn, up from N12.6tn a year earlier. This reflects an increase of N4.76tn or 37.74 per cent within a period of one year. The significant increase, according to the DMO, is mainly in the domestic debt component and is attributable to the additional issuance of debt securities to fund the 2016 budget deficit and the refinancing and redemption of matured securities. The DMO explained that the increase in borrowing could be looked at from the deficits contained in both the 2015 and 2016 budgets in relation to the Gross Domestic Product.

Chelsea Agree £70m deal to sign Morata

Chelsea have agreed a deal to sign Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata, the club have announced. Reports suggest the Premier League champions will pay £70 million for the Spain international, who is yet to agree personal terms or undergo a medical. Morata will arrive at Stamford Bridge and will be tasked with replacing Diego Costa, who is set to join Atletico Madrid after being told he is surplus to requirements by Antonio Conte. He will become the Blues's fourth signing of the summer, with Willy Caballero, Antonio Rudiger and Tiemoue Bakayoko already secured. He scored 20 goals in all competitions for Zinedine Zidane's side, but struggled to hold down a regular starting berth with Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo acting as competition.

John McCain has brain cancer, his office says.

Veteran US Republican Senator John McCain has been diagnosed with brain cancer and is reviewing treatment options, according to his office. The options may include chemotherapy and radiation, his doctors said. The 80-year-old politician is in "good spirits" recovering at home. The tumour was discovered during a surgery to remove a blood clot from above his left eye last week. A Vietnam veteran, Mr McCain spent more than five years as a prisoner of war. The six-term senator and 2008 Republican presidential candidate underwent surgery at a clinic in Phoenix, in the state of Arizona, last Friday. "The senator's doctors say he is recovering from his surgery 'amazingly well' and his underlying health is excellent," it added.

EFCC prepares to testify against Diezani in US,UK

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is ready to testify against a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, and oil barons, Kola Aluko and Jide Omokore in the United States and the United Kingdom. Our correspondent also learnt that further evidence had been sent to the US Justice Department, as well as the UK's National Crime Agency with a view to repatriating part of the $1.6bn allegedly stolen by Alison-Madueke, Aluko and Omokore. Two months later, as Aluko was meeting with Nigerian oil officials to discuss a contract, he arranged to buy two properties near London's Regent Parks: a £1.7m home at 39 Chester Close and 58 Harley House on the Marylebone Road for £2.8m. The US prosecutors have also moved to seize $144m in assets, including a 200-foot yacht and a Manhattan condominium, one block from Central Park, calling them the fruits of an international bribery scheme that involved Diezani. The Justice Department action targeted Aluko's ve

Official: Chelsea sign £40m Babayako from monaco

Tiemoue Bakayoko has completed his £40 million move to Chelsea from Monaco after completing his medical on Friday and signing a five-year deal. Chelsea and Antonio Conte targeted Bakayoko as their first choice option to strengthen their midfield and they are now expected to allow Nemanja Matic to leave to make room for the France international. Talks between Chelsea, Monaco and Bakayoko's representatives have moved slowly since they first started but all parties ultimatley came to an agreement for the 22-year-old. Bakayoko returned from his holiday in New York to complete the final arrangements of the transfer, though a knee injury could rule him out of the Blues's pre-season friendlies. Chelsea will next look to complete a deal for Juventus' Alex Sandro, which could break their transfer record that currently stands at £50m for Fernando Torres, as well as looking for attacking options.

Trump: We will maintain good relations with Qatar

The US will maintain good relations with Qatar, President Donald Trump has told an American news channel, adding that the US airbase won't be moved out of the Middle Eastern country despite the diplomatic and economic blockade imposed on Doha by the Saudi-led group. Qatar is home to the Al-Udeid airbase that holds the forward headquarters of Central Command and hosts around 10,000 American troops. Trump said, "We are going to have a good relationship with Qatar and not going to have a problem with the military base. If we ever had to leave, we'd have 10 countries willing to build us another one. And they'll pay for it. The days of us paying for things are largely over." During the two-day visit, Trump also signed an arms deal with Saudi Arabia worth almost $110bn.

Man stuck in cash machine feeds 'help' notes through receipt slot

The workman left his phone and pass card in his vehicle - so had no way of calling anyone about his embarrassing predicament. A workman trapped inside a cash machine was forced to pass handwritten notes through the receipt slot to summon help - but customers thought it was a joke. He became stuck when changing a lock to a room that leads to the back of the ATM, said police in Corpus Christi, Texas. Lieutenant Chris Hooper said: "Apparently he left his cellphone and the swipe card he needed to get out of the room outside in his truck." When he realised he was trapped with no way to communicate, he resorted to sliding notes through the slot. One read: "Please help. I'm stuck in here and I don't have my phone. Please call my boss ..." People withdrawing cash though it was a prank, but luckily one called police who heard a faint voice from inside the machine. They kicked down the door and freed the red-faced worker - his name has so far not been released

Venus Cruises into Wimbledon finals

Venus Williams defied time, the odds and Johanna Konta over two ragged sets here on Thursday to reach her ninth Wimbledon final at 37, the oldest contender since Martina Navratilova in 1994. The American made her Wimbledon debut just three years after that and has been an adornment ever since – and a five-times champion at her favourite tournament. Williams defeated Britain’s best – and first semi-finalist since Virginia Wade in 1978 – 6-4, 6-2 in an hour and a quarter in front of a Centre Court audience who had earlier been left short-changed in the first semi-final, when Garbiñe Muguruza beat the inexperienced world No87 Magdalena Rygarikova 6-1, 6-1 in just 65 minutes.

Free speech group sues US President Donald Trump for blocking twitter users

A free speech group on Tuesday sued US President Donald Trump for blocking Twitterusers from his @realDonaldTrump account, arguing the practice violates the First Amendment of the US Constitution. The lawsuit, brought by the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University in New York and joined by seven individual Twitter users, claims Trump blocked a number of accounts whose owners replied to his tweets with comments that criticised, mocked or disagreed with the president. Trump's blocking of the accounts amounted to an unconstitutional effort to suppress dissent, according to the lawsuit filed in federal court in the Southern District of New York. Because Trump frequently turns to Twitter to make policy statements, his account qualifies as a public forum from which the government cannot exclude people on the basis of their views, according to the lawsuit.

Nigeria's President Buhari to return soon-

President Muhammadu Buhari is "recuperating fast" and will return home "very soon", says Nigeria's acting head of state Yemi Osinbajo. He made the announcement at a press conference on Wednesday morning, after visiting Mr Buhari at the London hospital where he is being treated for an unspecified illness. Mr Osinbajo, now back in Nigeria, said he had discussed a wide range of issues during the hour-long meeting. Mr Buhari has been in London since May. The 74-year-old leader was elected to power in 2015, becoming the first Nigerian opposition leader to win an election. It is his second period of medical leave in the UK, the first began in January and he returned home in March. His long absence has led to speculation about whether he will be able to resume his presidential duties.

My preference is to remain at Arsenal, says Ozil

Mesut Özil says that his preference would “definitely” be to sign a new contract at Arsenal. The midfielder has entered the final 12 months of his £140,000-a-week deal and, in the absence of offers from any of the European clubs who could meet his wage demands, he is set to stay at Emirates Stadium for the upcoming season. The bigger issue has been whether Özil will re-sign at the club he joined from Real Madrid for £42.5m in 2013, with one of his options being to wait until January 2018 to see whether he gets a lucrative pre-contract offer from an overseas club relating to a free agent move in the summer. Arsenal, though, have worked hard to put forward an attractive deal of their own, which is worth a basic £280,000 a week. So far it has been a waiting game, with Özil keen to keep his options open as he moves into the new season. “It is definitely my preference to stay,” Özil said, at Arsenal’s launch of their new third kit in Sydney. “It is such a great club and I have always sai

City were caught on the hop by Alves' decision and Guardiola, who dined with the Brazilian last Friday, is said to be livid at missing out on the player he coached at Barcelona. Conte eyes Morata as possible replacement for Lukaku

Spanish striker Alvaro Morata is now the focus of frustrated Chelsea manager Antonio Conte’s attentions after Romelu Lukaku slipped through his fingers and signed for Manchester United, according to media reports. Chelsea have tabled a £62 million (70m euros, $80m) bid for the 24-year-old Morata but Real Madrid are holding out for around £80m, the reports say. Chelsea have offered Morata wages of £150,000 a week on a five year contract, according to London’s Evening Standard. Morata is keen to play for the manager and told The Guardian Conte had given him self belief. Morata came close to playing for Conte at Juventus in 2014 when the latter played a pivotal role in persuading him to join Juventus…only for the coach to jump ship and take over the national side. “I feel indebted to him because he’s the coach that most trusted in me, most wanted me, who made me feel I could perform at the highest level,” Morata told the newspaper in April. “Yet I’ve never had the fortune to actual
